My journey to AMC



So I thought I would tell you all a little bit more about me and how I setup AMC Marketing.

Back in the good old days I went to school in Ballymena, and I have to say they weren’t very good, I actually hated school. I couldn’t wait to leave. After my GCSEs I went to study business and IT at a local college. I was still unsure of what I wanted to do with my life when I left. All I remember is always thinking I’d love to work for myself. Well at 18 and with no money or experience behind me, that wasn’t really an option.


From then I worked a number of temporary roles. Then I got offered a job selling insurance, and I thought I was great! That was until I had to stay in Dublin for a week, to complete my training. Well it was a complete disaster. I got homesick before the train left Belfast. I cried the whole way to Dublin, freaked out at the hotel and rang daddy crying to come and lift me. Later that evening I was home in my own bed lol. I still hate trains! After a few years of temporary roles I had enough experience to finally go for my first permanent job. And so began my career at ETT.


Back to School

I enjoyed working so much more than I ever did being at school. But, I knew I could do so much more academically, if I applied myself to something that I really enjoyed. After a few discussions with my Manager and my husband, I decided to enrol in a Business Management degree at UUC. I loved it! I loved the lecturers, I loved my class mates and I loved the fact that I was able to apply all my study to my work. After lots of late nights traveling to and from Coleraine, working full time and studying evenings and weekends locked in my spare room... I graduated with a first class degree in Business Management.


A Promotion

Meanwhile, I had worked my way up in ETT and was now at Management level and was responsible for all of the marketing within the business. I continued to develop myself with lots of short courses, teaching diplomas and ILM qualifications. Now 13 years on I am a Business Development Manager with the same employer I started out with. It’s a varied role in a small business and I love it. I think my day job and the people i work with have really set me up with the means to start my own business. It has given me the mentality to stick at something, to make it work, to always do the right thing and most importantly to believe in myself and my skills set.


AMC was born

After speaking to a friend who is a small business owner, she mentioned that she needed someone to help create content for her new website. I offered to help and before I knew it AMC Marketing was born … I soon realised that there was the demand for small business marketing support, in the Mid Ulster area. These businesses needed flexible, affordable support from someone who was willing to work around the hectic schedule of a small business owner. Since then AMC has developed and helped lots of local businesses with their online marketing. AMC continues to grow more than I ever imagined. I love what I do and I wouldn’t change anything about how I got here. Anything is possible if you work

hard enough at it. I’ll leave you with this quote, which I believe is so true to life, “small business isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s for the brave, the patient and the persistent. It’s for the overcomer”
